Pike Township Fire Department
Division of Prevention Services – Fire Marshal
Civilian Observer/Internship Program

The Pike Township Fire Department Civilian Observer & Internship program was created in 2020. It seeks to provide an immersive environment whereby citizens can experience the work that members of the Pike Township Fire Department – Division of Prevention Services/Fire Marshal perform. During this program, observers are paired with a Fire Marshal and given an in-depth look at the day-to-day operations of the department. They are permitted to respond to emergency scenes with a responder and receive a close-up look at the action as it happens.

Many of the participants of the program have gone on to gain full-time employment in the fire service. We have graduates who are now firefighters and investigators across the United States. The mentorship that is gained by participating in the program is very unique and one of the only programs of its type that we’re aware of in the Midwest.

While participating in the program, participants are not granted any powers of emergency responders, firefighters, and/or peace officers. They may not issue orders or act as agents for the Pike Township Fire Department. Observers must follow all directions of firefighters and fire officers while participating in the program.

Requirements:

  • 18 years old or older
  • No felony convictions
  • No offensive tattoos or tattoos above the neck
  • Must be appropriately dressed (PTFD personnel will provide instructions on attire)
  • Will obey the orders of PTFD personnel at all times
